Teck Resources ($TECK.B) generated C$1.590 billion of operating cash flow in the September quarter, against C$647 million a year earlier. Its original results, dated 28 October, show the benefit of stronger commodity prices. They also show why an investor should read the cash statement alongside the operating report. Original results, pages 1 and 64.
QB produced 47,200 tonnes of copper, below 55,800 tonnes in June, after severe weather restricted power, access to planned ore and processing. Management expects additional mining faces to improve flexibility. That remains an operating expectation to test, rather than a completed recovery. Results, page 3.
The group can generate substantial cash while a major mine still has work to do. Recognising both facts gives a better starting point than choosing either a uniformly bullish or uniformly troubled account of the quarter.
Cash generation survives the deductions, but the deductions are substantial
The following are Canadian dollars, from the unaudited cash statement for the three months ended 30 September 2026. Accounts, page 64.
| Cash movement | C$m |
|---|---|
| Operating cash flow | 1,590 |
| Net investing outflow | (804) |
| Net financing outflow | (156) |
| Increase before exchange movements | 630 |
Investing includes C$716 million on property, plant and equipment and C$157 million of capitalised stripping. Financing includes C$55 million of lease repayments, C$50 million of interest and finance charges, and C$61 million of dividends. The net investing and financing totals also contain other flows; those detail lines should not be deducted twice. Accounts, page 64.
The business therefore added cash after a substantial investment programme and financing payments. That is stronger evidence than a margin calculated by subtracting a unit operating cost from a copper price. It still does not establish a recurring amount attributable to ordinary shareholders: project ownership, working capital, spending schedules and other financing flows affect the result.
Teck's net-cash definition includes lease liabilities in debt. Comparisons with another miner should use the same treatment before drawing a conclusion about financial strength. A large cash balance alone cannot settle the comparison if the obligations deducted differ.
Reported profit also needs separating from cash. The quarter contained a C$888 million pre-tax impairment reversal at Trail. Reversing an earlier accounting impairment increases profit without generating an equivalent customer receipt in that quarter. It is relevant to the carrying value and expected economics of the asset, but should not be counted as fresh cash available for distribution. Results and cash statement, pages 1 and 64.
QB's recovery needs operating flexibility
Teck reports progress at the tailings facility, including no related concentrator downtime for four consecutive quarters. It also brought forward work on Rock Bench 6 and expects completion of that work and permanent pipeline infrastructure in Q1 2027. Results, page 3.
The positive evidence deserves credit. Yet the weather disruptions illustrate why processing capacity alone does not establish dependable output. A mine needs access to suitable ore, stable power, workable material and acceptable recoveries. More mining faces could improve the ability to keep the plant supplied when conditions deteriorate. We would look for the improvement in actual throughput and recovery, followed by cash after the remaining work.
The safety disclosure requires a separate, serious reading. Teck reported a fatality at the Antamina joint venture on 27 October and said it was participating in the Antamina-led investigation. The release does not establish findings about its cause or responsibility. Results, page 4.
Improved prices and stronger performance elsewhere already provide the group with resources to complete QB's work. That is a fair reason to avoid treating a difficult quarter as proof the operating plan has failed. Equally, cash generated elsewhere should not substitute for evidence that QB is becoming more reliable. Both the cash accounts and the mine's operating results need to improve together before we would become more confident about repeatable returns.
