Queensland's 40% Coal Royalty Isn't Just High. It's a Different Kind of Tax Than Its Rivals Charge.

Queensland's top coal royalty rate is 40 per cent — nearly four times the Queensland Resources Council's cited global average of 12.9 per cent, and above New South Wales (10.8 per cent), the current US federal coal royalty (7 per cent), and British Columbia's net-revenue tax (2–13 per cent, and only after capital is recovered). QRC is a lobby group with an obvious stake in that comparison, but the design flaw underneath it — a price-tier royalty with no reference to cost — is real regardless of who's pointing at it.

Jindalee Is Taking McDermitt to Nasdaq via a SPAC. The ASX Shareholders Ride Along.

Jindalee Lithium (ASX:JLL) is folding its McDermitt project into a new US entity, US Elemental Inc., and merging it with Nasdaq-listed blank-cheque company Constellation Acquisition Corp I. Pro-forma enterprise value is pitched at US$571m, Jindalee keeps more than 80 per cent, and the combined company is targeting the ticker ULIT in Q4 2026 — pending shareholder and listing sign-off, a PIPE that isn't fully raised yet, and a live federal lawsuit over the project's exploration approval.

BHP will not give you a headcount for the last trucks at Mining Area C

The Nightly reported on 28 August 2026 that BHP is cutting roles at Mining Area C as autonomous haulage expands into MAC East. Industry sources, not the company, floated ‘up to about 10 per cent’ of a 1,596 headcount; BHP has not confirmed a number.

Jakarta is now nickel’s OPEC. The tape is trading rumours the ministry will not confirm.

ESDM capped 2026 nickel ore against 2025’s authorised tonnes and said it would not grant a broad lift. An unconfirmed Weda Bay top-up sent LME down; the ministry said the application was still under assessment. On 24 August APNI said no member had received a revised RKAB. The 25-million-tonne figure is a rumour. It has not been granted.

Lithium isn’t a cost-curve tape this month. It’s a Yichun EIA notice.

Jianxiawo is still idle. Yifeng’s ecology bureau said so on 7 August; carbonate then ran from about 140,000 to 154,000 RMB/t in a week. An EIA pre-acceptance notice (17–28 August) knocked the same contract from 152,000 to 149,000 RMB/t the next day. Benchmark has about 4% of global supply and about 60kt LCE hanging on the restart. That is a Chinese licensing tape, not an Australian unit-cost tape.

Vitrinite's $400m, Bowen's $6.8m: coking coal's cost-of-capital trap

Three Bowen Basin coking-coal names — Vitrinite, Bowen Coking Coal and Fitzroy — have all hit the wall or changed hands in under a year, and the common thread is the price of money, not the price of coal.

Indonesia didn't win the nickel war. It changed what winning means.

A wall of Indonesian laterite and HPAL capacity, much of it China-backed, has flattened the cost curve and left a graveyard of Western nickel producers. Pretending class 1 and class 2 are the same metal is how you misread the whole thing.
